The game of dice is all about probability, so how do gamblers ensure that they can win each time in a game that relies entirely on odds? It's simple; the way to a sure victory each time is to tell Lady Luck to hit the road and to just cheat instead.
The cheating method that many people prefer when playing a dice game like craps is to use loaded dice.
Loaded dice are also called weight dice because their weight is improperly distributed to help influence the outcome of the dice roll. People use loaded dice because the weight of the dice has been altered so that the dice will land on a certain side more often than they would just by using a regular pair of dice. The weight of loaded dice is affected by small amounts of certain materials within the dice like platinum, gold, lead, or mercury.
The person who uses the loaded dice in play is not necessarily the one who introduced them to the table in the first place. Sometimes there is at least one other person who knows that the they are loaded dice, the switcher. A switcher is someone who can swap the table dice with loaded dice and vice versa without allowing anyone else at the table to catch them in the act. The problem is that using loaded dice will only work in a game where the switcher holds the dice in their hand and doesn't shoot from a cup. Even the most experienced switcher should not abuse their skill, and such activity should only take place as a practical joke. The use of crooked dice of any kind is illegal in casinos, but some people just refuse to play fair.
Another method in which gamblers use to cheat at craps besides is by using loaded dice called capped dice. Capped dice have sides that have been shaved down and reformed with a different type of material. The different material used on capped dice will be more elastic than the unshaven sides of the dice, which allows the dice to bounce off the shaved sides and more likely land on the sides that have not been modified. However, capped dice can be exposed by simply feeling the give on sides of the dice with a fingernail.
Double number dice are exactly as they sound, where a die will have two or more sides that have the same number. Double number dice are used because they do not produce losing numbers in craps. Electric dice are dice that have one metallic side and function via a magnet that a player moves around under the craps table. However, electric dice are not used very often because they are easy to detect. If another player holds a magnet to a pair of dice and they stick, it's a pair of electric dice.
One of the most remarkable ways gamblers cheat at craps is by using tapping dice. Like loaded dice, tapping dice contain mercury. The difference between loaded dice and tapping dice is that the latter has a chamber inside shaped like a dumbbell that holds the mercury. To pull off the cheat with a pair of tapping dice, a gambler simply taps a corner of the die which will cause the mercury to shift to one end. Of all of cheat methods in the game of dice, tapping dice are among the most unreliable.
Some people like to play it straight and have no tolerance for a cheat. For such people there is a method to determine whether or not a pair of loaded dice is being used. To expose a cheat one simply needs to drop the dice into a glass of water numerous times. If the dice sinks and a certain side repeatedly lands face up, the dice used are loaded dice.
Gambling is something that many people take very seriously and when people are being cheated out of their hard-earned money, tempers will flare. That is why it is wise to be on the lookout for loaded dice being used as a craps table.
