Club Dice: Casino, Precision And Perfect Dice

When it comes to gambling, everyone wants the odds to be in their favor, casinos in particular. Casino dice come in a variety of colors and patterns, but all are just about the same. Manufacturers seek to fulfill the requirements of their consumers and strive to make the dice as perfectly cubed as they can.

To meet the needs of the consumer, the art of casino dice has been measured to a scientific T. Throughout the years, manufactures have changed the casino dice formula from cellulose nitrate to cellulose acetate to produce a more stable die. Uniformity is key in the art of the Precision die. Unless the gambler slips in a Crooked die, the dice are not going to be luckier even if you blow on them.

Most casino dice sticks come with logos or serial numbers specific to the casino to prevent any Crooked dice from slipping into the game. Currently, each stick comes with five casino dice wrapped in a neat sealed pack.

Crooked dice are made to throw the game in the gambler's favor, which is cheating. All manufacture certified casino dice are made right handed, where the one dot is facing up, the two dots are to the left and the three dots to the right. This is done so that  Crooked dice, which would have different spot orientation, can be easily spotted. As another precaution, many casinos have serial numbers written on the back of the dots. on their casino dice. These numbers can only be seen through the clear surface of the casino dice.

A precision die is named exactly for what it is expected to be: precise. However, between the 1920s and the early 1960s, the dice lacked the spectacular qualities of the modern die. Formally made of cellulose nitrate, the precision dice were unreliable due to the lack in stability of the material used. Cellulose nitrate dice were easily weakened by ultra-violet light and could only be stored in cool temperatures, much like their successors. However, the earlier models of dice were also partly water-soluble and completely acetone-soluble. These less than desirable factors did not fit the name that was given to these particular casino dice.

The cellulose nitrate club dice easily crystallized if not stored in favorable conditions. Upon crystallization, the club dice would become brittle and shatter under pressure. Starting from the corners of the die, gold or amber colored marbleized patterns would form and work towards the center. If the entire die was consumed by crystallization, the die was likely to break when pressure was applied. No one, casino or gambler, would enjoy this if the dice were thrown at a craps table.

This problem was addressed in the  1950s when manufacturers changed the formula of the precision dice material to cellulose acetate. This formula, though similar in storage requirements to its predecessor, proved to be more durable. The new models are crystallization free and are much more reliable in the sense that they will not bust under pressure and are easily cleaned. Although the new model is much more stable, manufacturers advise that the casino dice are still stored on ceramic or glass plates in cool, dry places.

After use, many casinos choose to sell their old precision dice in their gift shops as souvenirs, although some prefer to keep them to themselves. For a die to retire, it is defaced with casino made mark. There are a number of ways to retire a die, one of which is to drill a hole through the core. By state law, Atlantic City is required to drill a hole all the way through their retired casino dice. After being marked in some way, the dice are packed in small vials or boxes and put out for frivolous customers to take home.

With years of use, the casino dice have gone through spectacular transformations to ensure casinos and their players are satisfied. The precision dice have maintained a  high merit to their name due to the care that is taken to better the club dice. All casinos can rest assured that a pair of casino dice is perfect.
